This is pretty heavy...

I'm not completely sure about the intro to this song, but the main part is heavy. I think it could probably do with a change of lead synth. I really didn't take too well to it. The melody is fine, but the actual sound was quite ear piercing.

Other than that, this tune is phat. Keep it up man and hopefully we can bring more dubstep to newgrounds.

James

P.S. I don't usually ask for favours in return for reviews, but if you wouldn't mind checking out some of my dubstep tunes and possibly leave some criticisms it would be hugely appreciated.

cheers mate!

yeh i don't think i got this one perfect, and it was my first dub tune. i've got considerably better at the bass and making nicer melodies, so check out my new tunes. i'll have a listen to your stuff mate. nice one.

Not bad at all...

Would have been nice to hear a song out of it but what can you do. I was also hoping for a bit of wobble bass.

Other then that I don't have much to say. It's pretty good.

James.

P.S. Present it...

You've got to work on the synths...

OK, I want to be as constructive as possible here, so don't take what i'm about to say to be cruel or bitch.

Firstly, I think you need to change or at least soften up the synths at the beginning. They sound too harsh and definitely under produced. Maybe adding a little reverb to them with some chorus and get rid of some of the higher frequencies.

The beat in the beginning is alright. But I would suggest padding out the kick if your really looking for that dubstep sound. Just boost the lower frequencies of it and it should thicken it out a bit.

I really like that subtle beep sound playing the melody. It's nice and eerie and carries the rest of the piece well.

So on to the bass. It is OK. But OK can be greatly improved. I would suggest at least adding a sub-bass underneath to really give it that chest vibrating feel. I'd probably suggest also playing around with some reverb on the main bass synth as well.

All in all it's a very strange piece. I would really call it dubstep, but then again i'm not sure what I would call it. It's not bad by any means, but it does need alot of work on it.

Hope the review was helpful, James.

Thanks for the review and the suggestions.

A review for you.

Nice intro, you did a really decent job there. Not too long in my opinion, just the right sort of length. Captures interest and doesn't get boring.

Great work on the synths towards the end of the intro, nice and eerie. The bass is sounding pretty good, nice and chugging. Ok, so the drums seem a little weak to me. Maybe a bit too tiny, and seem to be lacking in the mid range. The pattern is pretty good, but it could use a little thickening out. Maybe a few crashes and something like a cowbell.

I appreciate it not being complete, and I think you can tell this from the outro but it's got potential to be a really sick tune. I think maybe try and thicken the bass out a bit, simply a bit more volume should do it. I'm thinking some female 'ah' vocals would sound really awesome as well, although I appreciate they're hard to find.

All in all it's a really nice tune man, although doesn't seem to be punchy enough. With a little mastering and some additional bits and bobs, this will be awesome.

Good luck with this man. James.

Nav responds:

Thanks for the comment about the intro, people were complaining, even though I thought I did a decent job. I dunno.

Drums weak? Definitely a possibility. You see, in order to get this track right, I needed to put a notch filter at 250 hz, as the snare didn't sound right without it. I need to work on my drums in general... There were crashes... sometimes, but its hard to hear. A cowbell would fit well, now that I think about it!

Yeah, this ain't done. Probably done for Newgrounds, though. Ok, I'll get the bass pumping. I don't see how "ah" vocals will fit, but I have a few samples of them anyways.

Hm, I did master, but not very well. I'll try and do a remaster to preserve the volume of the original track!

Thanks for the tips and the review! :)

Pretty hot...

This is a pretty hot tune man. It's got that really nice dubstep feel to it. Slow and reverberated. I'm not too sure about that synth though. It seems a little loud in the mix to me, and i'm not sure if really the right sort of sound.

With a bit of work though this could be phat.

Keep composing man, this tunes high in potential.

Wicked tune....

This is a good tune, but I think it could be improved drastically in a couple of areas. I think it would really benefit with a beefier kick. If I were you, i'd try and really boost the lower frequencies of your kick, just to make it more punchy.

Also, i'd make the bass more predominant in the mix, I think it could do with being a little louder. These are really the only aspects where I could offer possible improvement. Everything else is tight, especially the rest of the percussion which is amazingly well produced.

Good work man, keep them coming.

Paroxym responds:

Yup you've hit it right on the dot. I was thinking about the same things. Thanx. Ez

Wasn't expecting something this good man!

You reviewed one of my songs, so I politely thought i'd repay the favour. I was half expecting some really basic shitty drum and bass pasted together in fruity loops.

This has got serious potential. I'm loving the intro and lyrics which lead you to think that a really heavy bassline is gonna drop and a fast paced filthy drum beat is gonna rattle your stomach, but no. Instead you've got this mystical synthy stringy sounds and what can only be described as a subtle bassline. Funnily enough, in most cases this would be really dissapointing but here it really works.

I can tell your a talented producer and for this to be done in such a short period of time tells me i'm going to enjoy your other songs.

Good luck with the full version of this, James.

I'm really liking this... however...

This is a very good dubstep effort. I'm constantly trying to write decent dubstep but it's really hard to do. I like what you've done with the bass, but it could be a little fatter. Perhaps adding a sub bass underneath will thicken it out a bit. You've got some great ambient sounds and nice reverberation.

Perhaps it is lacking in a little melody. I'm not talking really melodic synths, but some echoy tuneful blips etc. You've definitely got the talent to make some awesome dubstep. I look forward to hearing your next.

Hope this was helpful. 5/5 and 8/10. Good work.

What a voice!

Man this song is incredible. What talent. You have the voice of an angel. The lyrics are amazing.

'You're not there'

Keep them coming man.

Great Riff

It's a really great riff, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be much more than that. This piece has got so much potential it's unbelievable, I could really see this as being a wicked tune. However lack of vocals and extreme repetition make it more boring than it should be.

I don't want you to see this as a negative review, but I like to offer my criticisms if I can to help people improve their music. I would suggest some break downs, a chorus and a key change.

I guess I know in your Author Commets you explained that this wasn't meant to be something innovative but I think it's got the potential to be... so why not do it?

Keep composing man, James

Mataro responds:

The riff started it all. I may just go back and redo it with vocals or the like, but I'm not sure as I've never attempted singing before. If I do go back and rework it though, I'd be sure to mix it up some.

A chorus is definitely needed, but I just couldn't fit it into the half hour I spent working on this. But like I said, I probably will go back and rework it, as I've already got a fair few people saying I should really expand upon it. :P

Thanks a ton for the comments though, Jimbobsthebest. I really appreciate it. Come back around any time, and I'll let you know if I really make some changes to it :D

How about those bad boy glasses? Minimal style music composer. Reviews always welcome, cheers.
