"Great Riff"

submission: -=Gallows=-
date: February 21, 2008

It's a really great riff, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be much more than that. This piece has got so much potential it's unbelievable, I could really see this as being a wicked tune. However lack of vocals and extreme repetition make it more boring than it should be.

I don't want you to see this as a negative review, but I like to offer my criticisms if I can to help people improve their music. I would suggest some break downs, a chorus and a key change.

I guess I know in your Author Commets you explained that this wasn't meant to be something innovative but I think it's got the potential to be... so why not do it?

Keep composing man, James

Author's Response:

The riff started it all. I may just go back and redo it with vocals or the like, but I'm not sure as I've never attempted singing before. If I do go back and rework it though, I'd be sure to mix it up some.

A chorus is definitely needed, but I just couldn't fit it into the half hour I spent working on this. But like I said, I probably will go back and rework it, as I've already got a fair few people saying I should really expand upon it. :P

Thanks a ton for the comments though, Jimbobsthebest. I really appreciate it. Come back around any time, and I'll let you know if I really make some changes to it :D

This really doesn't sound like your playing this man. It sounds very very programmed.

It's a bit of a messy song in general but it's not bad.

"A very nice beat, and good effects!"

submission: [Mow-Down]
date: January 29, 2008

This was pretty damn good. Very well produced and professional sounding. However I really felt a lack of bass in this piece. I was kinda craving that dirty distorted groaning sound, but it never came.

Because of this I only voted 4 and rated 9. I rarely give out 10's and hardly ever vote a 5, unless its amazing. Although I was rather impressed with your use of drums and effects.

Very nice job man, really looking to hearing more. Hope the review was helpful,

James

"A little distorted."

submission: Filthy Asylum
date: January 23, 2008

This piece is overall a little messy and distorted. You've got some nice ideas in here, but I think you've maybe gone a little far with the filth. It's difficult to get right, but the best sounding filthy dnb tracks have great clarity.

The drums are pretty good, but a little heavy in the mix. It's also a nice bass line, just a little over powering.

Keep working on this stuff man, i'm sure you'll bring out a tune in no time.

Author's Response:

Cheers man. Sorry i took so long to get back. Yeh, this was from my 'the dirtier the better' phase. I usually keep cleaner beats on my DnB tracks now, with more accurate and tuneful basslines. Check out my new tune, Microchef. I think you might like it ;)

Prelude no. 7 in Cm

"Very minimal, but very soothing."

date: January 18, 2008

It's always hard to give rating a write reviews on these sorts of songs. As I know your own inspiration has led you to write this, I feel it deserves higher than an 8. However as a piece to listen to it feels a little minimal to me. This isn't necessarily a bad things however, more that this isn't really the sort of stuff that creates those feelings inside me (just personal preference remember).

On the other hand, the melody is very nice and some great chord progressions. I can see this being used often in flash animations etc.

Good work Rocky, Keep composing.

January 18, 2008

Author's Response:

Yeah this is definitely minimal in a way--not a whole lot going on. But yeah I already had some fancier preludes. This one is more calm and straightforward :)

I'm glad you like the melody though, and progression. I feel those are some of the stronger points. I hope it gets used in some animations!

Hah, thanks for reviewing.

Universe by Halcyon

"Nice..."

date: January 17, 2008

This is a nice metal tune, but is still a little under produced. The vocal part and drums are pretty decent. But the guitar sounds a little off.

It's a pretty good tune, but there isn't really much of a catchy melody. However you've got some pretty good rhythms in there and you can tell there is an overall level of musicianship which cannot be compromised.

It's a good tune, but it could do with a little beefing up.

Good work man, I hope the criticisms were helpful. Keep it up.

Author's Response:

thanks dude. i need all the critical help i can get because i'm putting out CD's from my home studio and i really need to get my production skills together. my recording setup is only worth about $600 at the moment so i really have to push my equipment for what its worth. hopefully i can tweak the sounds better when i have more and better gear

Awww, shucks.

I'm not really THAT good. xD

Haha, thanks.

You need to strap down and get back to writing piano music, however, my good friend.

"Nicely done..."

submission: Hydrogenic

This was a decent techno tune. You used some really nice synths and had some great melodies in here.

However was the kick drum a little too quiet? It seemed a little distant in the mix. Thats my only criticism really so good work. Oh and BTW your transitions are fine.

Keep up the good work and keep composing.

I really liked this song and i'm not really sure why. It's so underproduced it's ridiculous, but I think thats what I like about it.

Your right it is happy and also a bit odd. But I like it.

Good effort, no criticisms this time.
